Local Citation Building for Small Businesses
Citations are online mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). They appear on directories like Yelp, Yellow Pages, and industry-specific platforms. Google uses citations to verify that your business is real, active, and located where you say you are. The more consistent and widespread your citations, the stronger your signal in local search results.
NSC Marketing builds and manages citation profiles for local service businesses, giving Google the trust signals it needs to rank you higher in Google Maps and local search.
What We Do
What Citation Building Includes
Citation work has two parts: cleaning up what exists and building new listings where they matter.
Citation audit. Before building anything new, we audit your current citations across major directories, data aggregators, and industry platforms. We’re looking for listings with wrong phone numbers, old addresses, misspelled business names, and duplicate entries. These inconsistencies confuse Google and weaken your local authority.
NAP cleanup. Every incorrect listing gets corrected. Every duplicate gets merged or removed. The goal is one clean, consistent version of your business information everywhere it appears online.
Directory submissions. We submit your business to high-authority general directories (Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, BBB) and industry-specific directories relevant to your trade. A roofer gets listed on roofing directories. A dentist gets listed on dental directories. Generic one-size-fits-all submission lists don’t work as well as targeted placements.
Data aggregator submissions. Data aggregators (Neustar/Localeze, Foursquare, Data Axle) feed your business information to hundreds of smaller directories and apps. Submitting directly to these sources pushes your NAP data across the ecosystem faster and more accurately than submitting to individual directories one at a time.
Ongoing monitoring. Citations aren’t a one-time project. Directories change, listings get overwritten by data feeds, and new directories launch. We monitor your citation profile regularly and fix issues as they appear.
Why Citations Still Matter in 2026
Some SEO providers have downplayed citations in recent years, claiming they don’t move the needle anymore. That’s a misread of how the ranking algorithm works.
Citations alone won’t put you in the Map Pack. But citation consistency is a foundational signal that Google checks before everything else. If Google finds conflicting information about your business across the web, it reduces confidence in your listing. That affects your Maps visibility, your Knowledge Panel, and your ability to rank for local searches.
Think of citations as the floor, not the ceiling. You can’t build a strong local presence without them, but you need GBP optimization, reviews, links, and good on-page content to push past the competition.
Structured vs. Unstructured Citations
Structured citations are formal listings on business directories. Your NAP appears in a consistent, predictable format. These are the ones most people think of: Yelp, BBB, Angi, industry directories.
Unstructured citations are mentions of your business on blogs, news articles, event pages, chamber of commerce sites, and social media. They don’t follow a directory format, but Google still picks them up and uses them to validate your business.
A strong citation profile has both. We build structured citations through targeted directory submissions and create opportunities for unstructured citations through local outreach and content placement.
What a Weak Citation Profile Looks Like
If any of these sound familiar, your citation profile needs attention:
- Your business shows up with an old phone number on directories you’ve never heard of
- There are two or three versions of your business name floating around online
- You moved locations and your old address still appears in search results
- You’ve never submitted your business to data aggregators
- Your Yelp, BBB, or industry directory listings are unclaimed or incomplete
Each of these creates friction between your business and Google’s trust in your information. Cleaning them up produces direct improvements in your local visibility.
